first 5K in ten years
June 29, 2010
Sometimes a person is surprised by how long it has been.
That said, I'd like to get back to running. My brother, who likes to run marathons and has done a triathalon now and again, said something wise about exercising: "I never feel worse after exercising."
I tried to think of a time I'd felt worse. Even on those horrid, horrid days I've never felt worse. Now I think of what he said all the time. I won't feel worse, I think, and then I head out the door.
Side note: There was that time that I cried in the middle of a run. Yup, on the running trail. I'd like to say I finished my cry and ran to completion, but truth was I walked home.
But did I feel better? Yes. I always feel better after crying.
So 10 years has past since my running days, but I started running this spring and this past June I ran a 5K. I'd like to keep it up. But how? I don't know that I really love running races (too competitive -- I'm a first child and I'm not about to be fast at these things). I'm thinking of motivating myself with coffee shops. All runs end at a coffee shop.
If anybody has any ideas, I'm listening . . .

I like to run and also find myself struggling for motivation at times. I set myself a goal to run 30 minutes first thing every morning for 30 days, and see what that does for me. I'm on day three and so far, so good. I thought it would be torture, but I'm surprised how much I look forward to it and has gotten my day off to a great start (endorphins plus caffeine must agree with me!). I'm not a morning person AT ALL so this is an interesting experience. Only 27 days to go. At the end, if I stick with it, I may reward myself with a new running outfit.
I have a friend who has similar sentiments to yours (about running). She makes it a social thing. She has a running group that she's been running with for years and that keeps her going. I'm happy to connect you if you'd like (they aren't too far from you). Shoot me a note and I'll pass it along.
Cheers!
Brad
This is great! Thank you. I like the 30 minutes for 30 days Nancy. I'm probably going to contact you both -- for the info about the social running group and also to see if you might want to run to a coffee shop (different one each time) maybe this fall, Nancy . . . Cool!
